BMW 3 Series Sedan

The new BMW 3 Series Sedan: Dynamic capability, efficiency and comfort are given the perfect stage.

At a glance:

The new 3 Series Sedan: sixth generation of the world’s best-selling premium vehicle accentuates the brand’s sporting character with its dynamic lines and athletic overall impression. The new 3 Series Sedan has also grown in terms of dimensions. Particularly striking are its wider track and, as a result, more impressive on-the-road presence. The flat design of the revised BMW kidney grille also serves to underline the car’s sporting feel. A modern interpretation of the classic three-box design with sweeping bonnet, short front overhang, long wheelbase and set-back greenhouse allows the new BMW 3 Series Sedan to project the dynamic allure typical of BMW in even more concentrated form.

Increased interior space: a 93-millimetre increase in length enhances the elegant, sporty silhouette of the 3 Series. The rear passengers also gain from the car’s increased exterior dimensions and are welcomed by extra legroom inside the rear doors as they climb aboard. There is also 15 millimetres of additional knee room behind the front seats, while headroom is up by eight millimetres.

Classic BMW interior: the cockpit wraps around the driver with a typically BMW driver focus and ensures that all important functions are within easy reach. The impressive ergonomics, high-grade materials and consummate workmanship underline the premium ambience of every model in the range.

Three equipment lines: the new BMW 3 Series Sedan is available in three equipment lines in addition to the entry-level version. The Sport Line, Luxury Line and Modern Line allow customers to give their car a personal and eye-catching appearance and adapt it to their individual preferences. The careful coordination of equipment features embraces both exterior design elements and the selection of materials and colours for each model. An M Sport Package with special exterior and interior features is in the pipeline for summer 2012.

Outstanding performance and efficiency: powerful engines, top-class chassis technology and a body boasting impressive torsional rigidity allow the new BMW 3 Series to build on its position as the sportiest sedan in its segment. Ride comfort is likewise taken to a new level. Agility and driving dynamics remain specialities of the sports sedan and are key ingredients in the enviable driving pleasure it offers its owners.

Improved vehicle handling and enhanced driving pleasure: a longitudinally mounted engine, rear-wheel drive and 50:50 weight distribution are traditional 3 Series features which have characterised driving pleasure in every generation of the car. Four torquey, refined and economical engines, all of which feature state-of-the-art BMW TwinPower Turbo technology, will be available for the new BMW 3 Series Sedan from launch.

BMW EfficientDynamics technology in action: noticeable increases in output are accompanied by reductions in fuel consumption and emissions – significant in some cases – over the previous-generation 3 Series. The Auto Start-Stop function comes as standard with all engine-gearbox combinations.

BMW 328i with 2.0-litre displacement: its BMW TwinPower Turbo four-cylinder engine fronts a new generation of light and powerful petrol units which fit the new BMW 3 Series’ dynamic concept like a glove. The state-of-the-art turbocharged powerplant develops 180 kW/245 hp and peak torque of 350 Nm (258 lb-ft) from as low down as 1,250 rpm, accelerating the BMW 3 Series from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 5.9 seconds. Average fuel consumption is just 6,4 litres per 100 kilometres (44.1 mpg imp).

The BMW 335i is a gift to six-in-line fans: the BMW TwinPower Turbo straight-six petrol engine with 3.0-litre displacement develops peak output of 225 kW/306 hp and maximum torque of 400 Nm (295 lb-ft) at just 1,200 rpm, ensuring that the new BMW 3 Series outstrips the performance of its predecessor, while undercutting its fuel consumption and emissions.

More economical and lower in pollutant emissions: the high-output BMW TwinPower Turbo four-cylinder diesel engine puts an even more efficient foot forward. The cutting-edge unit gives the BMW 320d 135 kW/184 hp and 380 Nm (280 lb-ft) of torque and also powers the BMW 320d EfficientDynamics Edition. Here it combines peak output of 120 kW/163 hp with average fuel consumption in the EU driving cycle of just 4,1 litres of diesel per 100 kilometres (68.9 mpg imp).

And finally, the first full-hybrid compact sports sedan will celebrate its premium segment premiere in autumn 2012. The new BMW ActiveHybrid 3 will see innovative BMW ActiveHybrid drive technology blend with the sporting character of the BMW 3 Series to dynamic and efficient effect.

Eight-speed automatic gearbox for all models: the new sports sedan comes as standard with a cutting-edge six-speed manual gearbox. An eight-speed automatic, which supports the Auto Start-Stop function, can be specified as an option in conjunction with all the petrol and diesel engines for the new BMW 3 Series.

Driving Experience Control with ECO PRO mode comes with four driving programs: the new function allows the driver to choose between sporty, ultra-sporty, comfortable and extremely economical driving. ECO PRO mode helps drivers of all 3 Series models to maintain an economy-optimised driving style and therefore increase the distance the car can travel on each tank of fuel. Brake Energy Regeneration, the Optimum Shift Indicator, a disengageable air conditioning compressor in many models and the need-based operation of ancillary components all contribute to further reductions in fuel consumption.

BMW ConnectedDrive gives safety a boost: a constantly expanding range of driver assistance systems responding to the most diverse driving situations ensure even greater safety and assurance. In a new development in this premium class, the new BMW 3 Series Sedan will be available with the latest-generation full-colour Head-Up Display. Safety is further enhanced by the Lane Change Warning System and Lane Departure Warning System. The Active Protection safety package, Advanced eCall and preventive occupant protection measures help to avoid accidents or, should the worst come to the worst, reduce their impact.

BMW ConnectedDrive meets the most advanced standards of infotainment: high-functionality interface technology enables the driver and passengers to make extensive use of external mobile phones and music players inside the new BMW 3 Series Sedan. New Bluetooth office functions allow internet-based services such as weather, news etc., as well as calendar entries and text-based messages (SMS and e-mail), to be viewed in the Control Display of the iDrive operating system and read out via the Text to Speech function.

Maximising comfort with BMW ConnectedDrive: comfort-enhancing technologies developed under the BMW ConnectedDrive umbrella include BMW Parking Assistant, Surround View, Active Cruise Control with Stop&Go function, Speed Limit Info including No Passing Info display, and Real-Time Traffic Information (RTTI).

A body structure boasting particularly high torsional rigidity and far-reaching active and passive safety systems provides maximum occupant protection. An intelligent lightweight body construction with flow-optimised underbody structure, Air Curtain technology – making its debut – for improved air flow around the front wheels, and sophisticated chassis technology with high light-alloy content play their part in laying on sporty handling, high agility and further enhanced ride comfort.

A wide range of storage compartments enhance practicality: two large drinks holders are now integrated into the centre console ahead of the gearshift lever; these can be replaced by the oddments tray also included in the range of standard equipment. The front and rear door pockets now contain generous stowage surfaces, and the front doors have space for drinks bottles up to one litre in size. Boot capacity has increased by 20 litres. An optional through-loading system with 40:20:40 folding rear seat backrest offers flexible transportation solutions for bulky goods.

Tokyo Motor Show

The introduction of groundbreaking drive system innovations sees BMW taking driving pleasure to consistently greater heights, while at the same time reducing fuel consumption and emissions to ever lower levels. At the Tokyo Motor Show 2011 (3 – 11 December 2011) the German premium carmaker is underlining its pace-setting development expertise in this field with the presentation of next-generation BMW ActiveHybrid technology, new four-cylinder petrol engines with BMW TwinPower Turbo technology and – for the first time in the Japanese market – a six-cylinder in-line diesel engine with BMW BluePerformance technology. This year’s Tokyo Show is hosting the world premiere of the new BMW ActiveHybrid 5. The full-hybrid Sedan brings together a six-cylinder in-line petrol engine, an electric drive system, an eight-speed automatic gearbox and a high-performance lithium-ion battery. This package of technology allows the brand’s third hybrid model to be driven on purely electric power around town, offers drivers a boost function delivering extremely dynamic acceleration, and enables the car to coast with the combustion engine switched off. The BMW ActiveHybrid 5 also comes with a globally unique intelligent energy management system, which works in tandem with the navigation system to prepare the car’s drive functions in advance for upcoming road conditions.

Members of the new generation of four-cylinder petrol engines with BMW TwinPower Turbo technology see action not only under the bonnet of the new BMW 1 Series, but also in the BMW X1 xDrive20i. And BMW TwinPower Turbo engines also provide the heartbeat of the new BMW 6 Series Coupé. Here again, the result is driving pleasure taken to another new level and efficiency without parallel in this market segment.

Advanced Diesel technology, including BMW BluePerformance, gives BMW another string to its bow when it comes to drastically reducing emissions on the road. Indeed, Japan is now preparing to welcome its first diesel BMW. The BMW X5 xDrive35d BluePerformance combines a sporty, commanding appearance with the imposing pulling power and exemplary emissions of its 3.0-litre six-cylinder in-line engine. In addition to a diesel particulate filter and oxidation catalytic converter, its exhaust treatment package also features an AdBlue system with urea injection to reduce NOx levels in the car’s exhaust. All of which allows BMW BluePerformance technology to make its exhaust emissions as clean as possible and therefore satisfy the world’s most stringent exhaust standards.

“Golden Steering Wheel” award

Off to a perfect start: the new BMW 1 Series wins “Golden Steering Wheel” award.

New edition of compact model wins renowned competition run by the "Bild am Sonntag" magazine - second place in the convertible category goes to the new BMW 6 Series Convertible.

Munich. Just a few weeks after its market launch, the new BMW 1 Series has already won its first internationally significant automobile award. The edition of the BMW compact model is the winner of the “Golden Steering Wheel” awarded by "Auto Bild" and "Bild am Sonntag". The coveted trophy was presented to BMW AG Board Chairman Dr. Norbert Reithofer at a gala event in Berlin yesterday. The BMW 1 Series asserted itself in the class of compact automobiles. The second BMW model to compete for the "Golden Steering Wheel", the new BMW 6 Series Convertible, likewise achieved an outstanding result with second place in the category of open-top vehicles.

It was the 36th time “Golden Steering Wheel” has been awarded, making it one of the most important and tradition-steeped automobile awards in Europe. It goes to the most impressive new models which have been launched on the automobile market during the year in question. This year, 46 new models competed in various segments. The choice of best in each class was based on a readers' vote, in which some 260,00 readers of the automobile magazine group "Auto Bild" and the Sunday newspaper "Bild am Sonntag" took part, as well as the verdict of a 42-strong jury made up of racing drivers, engineers, editors and celebrity testers.

In the star-studded compact vehicle category, the new BMW 1 Series came out top in both the readers' vote and the jury's verdict. It was able to outshine the competition with its outstanding sporty style and efficiency, optimised comfort and extended space, expressive design and premium quality. "The success of the new BMW 1 Series shows that we are doing excellently in this segment, too," said Dr. Norbert Reithofer after the award ceremony. The current trophy is the second "Golden Steering Wheel" to be won by BMW for a compact model. The BMW 1 Series Coupé won the sought-after award in 2008.

The BMW 1 Series stands out as an exceptional automobile within the compact segment not least due to its rear-wheel drive, still unique in this class. Its sporty character is also underlined by a fully updated portfolio of engines. Two newly developed petrol engines and three diesel power units cover an output range from 85 kW/116 bhp to 135 kW/184 bhp. Due to BMW Twin Power Turbo Technology and the large number of standard BMW EfficientDynamics measures used in all engines, the excellent driving pleasure offered by this model is combined with often significant reductions in fuel consumption and emission levels.

As compared to the predecessor model, the luggage volume of the new BMW 1 Series has increased to 360 litres and it also offers additional leg space at the rear. Its extensively refined chassis technology also ensures perceptibly optimised ride comfort. In addition to the air conditioning system, standard fittings include the drive experience switch with ECO PRO mode for individual vehicle set-up and fuel consumption optimisation. The new BMW 1 Series is the first model in its class to be fitted with an optional 8-speed automatic transmission. What is more, the range of driver assistance systems and mobility services under BMW ConnectedDrive reaches a level previously only available in much higher vehicle segments. Some of the features available for the BMW 1 Series include the BMW parking assistant, lane departure warning including rear collision warning, Speed Limit Info with overtaking ban display, real-time traffic information and apps for use of the online services Facebook and Twitter inside the vehicle.

BMW November News in Brief

BMW named most reliable car manufacturer in Fleet News annual survey

Research into nearly 900,000 cars operated by the country’s biggest 50 leasing companies has found that the BMW 3 Series range is the most reliable model in the 2010 FN50 survey, whilst BMW was found to be the most reliable manufacturer.

The FN50 reliability survey, undertaken by Fleet News and financial consultants Grant Thornton, asks leasing companies to assess reliability according to the number of breakdowns per model on their fleet.  The majority of the vehicles surveyed are used for business and are subjected to higher than average mileage and are constantly used in all conditions.  This testing environment means that winning the FN50 is a true testament to the reliability of the BMW range and specifically the BMW 3 Series.

Fleet News editor, Stephen Briers, said: “BMW has built on its position as the most reliable car manufacturer supplying the UK’s largest contract hire companies with the 3 Series taking first place as the most reliable model, adding yet another attribute to low CO2 emissions, modest overall running costs and rewarding driving behaviour and making its cars more desirable to fleet operators and company car drivers.”

Tim Abbott, Managing Director at BMW UK, said: “We are delighted to have won the overall honour in the FN50 reliability survey. The outgoing BMW 3 Series Saloon and the 3 Series range overall has been and continues to be an outstanding success for us. Awards such as this ensure customers can buy a class-leading vehicle safe in the knowledge that only years of enjoyable, hassle free motoring in a premium car await.”

The new BMW 7 Series Luxury Edition
In addition to the existing SE and M Sport models, BMW is pleased to announce the latest addition to the BMW 7 Series line up, t he Luxury Edition.

The BMW 7 Series Luxury Edition offers customers an enhanced specification and is available on all diesel powered 7 Series models.  The Luxury Edition adds 19-inch light alloy multi-spoke wheels, powered bootlid operation, comfort seats, BMW Professional loudspeaker system, rear seat heating, soft-close doors, sports leather steering wheel, exclusive Nappa Leather upholstery and a choice of Azurite or Moonstone BMW Individual metallic paintwork.

This enhanced package, worth £7,785, is available for an additional £1,500, making the 7 Series Luxury Edition available from just £58,920 OTR.

BMW press fleet to be equipped with winter tyres

BMW UK believes so strongly in the benefits of winter tyres that it will equip almost all of its press cars with the special rubber between November and March - the first time any premium manufacturer has taken such a bold step in the UK. This will enable users of the press fleet to experience winter tyres for themselves and allow them to travel throughout Europe without restriction, whether it be a legal, safety or performance issue.

BMW 530d Gran Turismo is the 2011 chauffeur car of choice

The BMW 530d Gran Turismo took home the class win in the under £50,000 category at the Chauffeur Car of the Year Awards 2011.  Commended for its high levels of luxury and impressive economy, the BMW 530d Gran Turismo trumped stiff competition from the Mercedes-Benz E-class, Jaguar XF and Audi A6.

Paul Gibson, Editor of thechauffeur.com and head of the awards committee, commented: "The BMW 5 Series Gran Turismo represents amazing value for money for any chauffeur, especially with the program on offer by BMW.  The vehicle offers the rear seat client almost the same comfort and space as the 7 Series range whilst offering the chauffeur incredible MPG figures and adequate space for luggage. This is what set the 5 Series Gran Turismo apart from its competitors in the category.”

The BMW 5 Series Gran Turismo is available on the BMW Chauffeur Programme along side the BMW 7 Series.  The programme offers competitive contract hire rates, for example a 530d Gran Turismo for £525 per month based on three years or 60,000 miles including servicing, enhanced specification packages and predictable running costs.

BMW crowned Fleet Manufacturer of the Year at GreenFleet Awards 2011

As recognition of the class-leading position BMW Group vehicles command, courtesy of EfficientDynamics technologies, the marque has once again scooped the top prize at the Green Fleet Awards to be crowned Fleet Car Manufacturer of the Year.

BMW Group was recognised, for the fourth year in a row, as the car manufacturer that had shown the greatest improvements in CO2 emissions, expanding its range of low emission vehicles available to fleet customers.  This commitment is demonstrated by the introduction of vehicles such as the new BMW 520d EfficientDynamics, which has CO2 emissions of just 119g/km, and the BMW 320d EfficientDynamics, which returns just 109g/km.

Stephen Chater, BMW Group Corporate Operations Manger, said: “It is great news that BMW has once again been crowned Fleet Car Manufacturer of the Year.  This award recognises BMW’s continued commitment to reducing emissions through its EfficientDynamics programme, across the entire range.”

BMW EfficientDynamics triumphs at 2011 ACFO Awards

BMW has retained the Environmental Initiative Award for the second year in a row at the 28th annual Association of Car Fleet Operator Awards for its use of EfficientDynamics technologies in reducing fleet emissions.

The Best Environmental Initiative Award was given to BMW for the suite of technologies, present in every BMW model, which helps businesses to improve their carbon footprint.  The BMW EfficientDynamics programme was first introduced in 2007 and incorporates a wide variety of fuel-saving and emissions-reducing measures across the whole vehicle range as standard.  EfficientDynamics technologies include Auto Start-Stop, Brake Energy Regeneration and Active Aerodynamics, amongst a range of other features.

Regional Hopeful Laura Trott

Specialist Cars are very proud to sponsor local athlete and cyclist destined for the London 2012 games, Laura Trott. Laura excels in her field and is currently the senior world champion in the team pursuit. Here is a little more about Laura and the events she competes in:

There are two events on the track that Laura can take part in, which are the Team Pursuit and the Omnium.

The Team pursuit is an event in which three girls go on the track as a team and have to set the fastest time that they can and finish as a three. Each girl takes it in turns to set the pace on the front of the line, the stronger riders will do longer turns, so more laps on the front. The race is over 3km long.

The second event is the Omnium. This is like an athletics pentathlon. There are 6 events in this race. The Flying lap, which is on your own and you set the quickest time you can. The Points race, which is a bunch race where all rider will be on the track, around 25 people, and on every 10th lap there is a sprint for points. The person who crosses the line will get 5 points, 2nd will get 3points, 3rd will get 2 points and 4th will get 1 point. Everyone else would get none. The person with the most amount of points at the end of 30km would then win. There is then an Elimination race which is every lap the rider who crosses the line last gets pulled out and must exit the track. Until there are 2 people left on the track and they will sprint for the win. That is then the end of day one. Day two consists of an Individual pursuit, which is like team pursuit but on your own for 3km. So the fastest person to complete 3km wins. This is followed by a scratch race which again is everyone on the track but it’s a simple as the first person across the line wins and this is over 20km. The final race of the competition is the 500m time trial. This is an individual for 500m and the person with the quickest time wins.

Laura has been World Champion at both of these events. She was Junior World Champion in the Omnium last year and she is currently Senior World Champion in the Team Pursuit at Senior level which she won when she was just 18 and the only Great Britain rider to have done this!

For London 2012 there are currently 8 riders on the long list for the Team Pursuit, one of which is Laura. There are 2 riders for the Omnium again one of them being Laura. But having been told last week that the Omnium rider will come out of the Team Pursuit at the moment, Laura is in a great position as the 2nd rider on the list doesn't rider team pursuit.

Laura started cycling when she was 8 years old down at the Welwyn Track and has been National Champion 17 times in a number of different events including; road racing, grass track and track. She currently holds the National record in the Individual pursuit for juniors. Laura has won the 2 world titles and has also been European Champion at Junior Level and again this year at Senior Level both for Team Pursuit.

Laura’s Ambitions

My biggest ambition is to become Olympic Champion. I have always thought that 2016 would be my first Olympics as it seems to fall at a good age for me. But looking at this year already I am now going to target 2012 and would like to become Olympic champion then. I see myself targeting the double which not many people can say they could possibly achieve.
I would like to compete in at least 3 Olympic Games. I see myself targeting Track again for 2016 rather then focusing on a road career for the following Olympics. Depending on how 2012 goes of course.
