The new BMW 2 Series Gran Tourer.

With the new BMW 2 Series Gran Tourer, BMW has carved out yet another new vehicle segment. With its generous space, versatility and groundbreaking flexibility, the BMW 2 Series Gran Tourer is the world’s first premium compact model to offer up to seven seats and fully meet the mobility requirements of young families.

Compact yet capacious.

Despite its compact dimensions – measuring just 4,556 millimetres long, 1,800 mm wide and 1,608 mm high – the new BMW 2 Series Gran Tourer offers ample space and a generous luggage compartment that can be extended in capacity from 645 to 805 litres. With the rear-seat backrests folded down, this rises to an impressive 1,905 litres of load space. Ensuring maximum variability is the standard-fitted fore-aft sliding rear seat bench – with a 40:20:40-split backrest that folds down at the press of a button – which allows three child seats to be fitted. Extending the possibilities even further is an optional third row of seats which can be completely lowered into the loading floor. Maximising the vehicle’s everyday practicality is a range of storage options for all three rows of seats, as well as rails on the front-seat backrests with fold-out tables attached. The new BMW 2 Series Gran Tourer is a pioneer in uniting the segment’s traditional attributes – such as spatial functionality and comfort – with the hallmark BMW values of dynamics, elegance and premium quality.

Lined up for market launch: five turbo engines and all-wheel drive.

Five newly developed turbo engines with three and four cylinders (85 kW/116 hp to 141 kW/192 hp, fuel consumption combined: 6.4–3.9 l/100 km [44.1–72.4 mpg imp]; CO2 emissions combined: 149–104 g/km)* team up with the unique BMW EfficientDynamics package of measures to guarantee a unique driving experience that couples sporty dynamics with maximum efficiency and the lowest CO2 emissions in the segment. The only vehicle in the premium compact class to offer up to seven seats, the BMW 220d xDrive Gran Tourer will be available with all-wheel drive right from market launch.
The assistance systems and information and entertainment options available under the umbrella of BMW ConnectedDrive enhance both driving safety and convenience. Take the Head-Up Display, for example, which projects all relevant information directly into the driver’s field of view, or the Traffic Jam Assistant that helps the driver accelerate, brake and stay in lane.

Entertainment on the move for children as well.

Thanks to the new “myKIDIO” app (initially available in Germany only), long journeys can be fun even for younger passengers. The app makes its debut in the BMW 2 Series Gran Tourer and provides appropriate content for children and families – e.g. feature films, series, audio books and audio plays – on tablets such as the Apple iPad to keep rear passengers entertained. The driver or front passenger remains in complete control of the content being played: the app is easily operated via the iDrive Controller and Control Display as soon as the mobile device is connected to the car. At this point the “myKIDIO” app enables the control and release of age-appropriate content on the hooked-up tablets, turning long-distance drives into an enjoyable experience even for children. The Control Display shows what the children are watching on their tablet at any time, while the kids in the rear can also use the BMW Kids Cockpit to check out information relevant to the journey (e.g. time of arrival, speed and outside temperature) in a simple and fun way.

Four model variants for further individualisation.

In addition to the standard version, the new BMW 2 Series Gran Tourer is available in a further four model variants. The Advantage model offers enhanced functionality over the standard model, including, among other features, two-zone automatic air conditioning, Park Distance Control at the rear, Cruise Control with Braking function and a multifunctional steering wheel. The Sport Line model accentuates the sporting aspect with exclusive exterior specifications, special light-alloy wheels and sports seats, while the Luxury Line highlights its exclusivity with chrome applications, select light-alloys and leather appointments. Beyond these, the M Sport model comes with a choice of the M Aerodynamics package, BMW Individual high-gloss Shadow Line, M leather steering wheel and M Sport seats, among other features.

* Fuel consumption figures according to ECE test cycle, may vary depending on the specified tyre format and optional equipment (e.g. third row of seats).

Further information on official fuel consumption figures, specific CO2 emission values and the electric power consumption of new passenger cars is included in the following guideline: “Leitfaden über Kraftstoffverbrauch, die CO2 emissions und den Stromverbrauch neuer Personenkraftwagen” (Guideline for fuel consumption, CO2 emissions and electric power consumption of new passenger cars), which can be obtained from all dealerships, from Deutsche Automobil Treuhand GmbH (DAT), Hellmuth-Hirth-Str. 1, 73760 Ostfildern-Scharnhausen and at http://www.dat.de/en/offers/publications/guideline-for-fuel-consumption.html. The BMW 1 Series for 2015

Nearly two million 1 Series models have been sold since the introduction of the first 1 Series generation ten years ago. This latest incarnation builds on the winning formula of these three- and five-door predecessors with new power units from the latest BMW engine family, additional EfficientDynamics technologies fitted as standard, and careful enhancements to the exterior and interior design.

The level of standard equipment is now even higher, new options have been added and with new mobility services from BMW ConnectedDrive, there are even more ways to increase the functionality and personalisation of the new 1 Series.

Design

The proportions, lines and surface design of the new BMW 1 Series bear all the classical hallmarks of a BMW with its set-back passenger compartment, long bonnet and short overhangs, in particular, give it a uniquely sporting presence. The new car features subtle but key differences to refine yet further the overall package. At the front, a new lower apron with larger air intakes and a horizontal bar combines with reshaped BMW kidney grilles and new headlamps that feature LED daytime driving lights as standard on all models. For the first time, full LED headlamps with low and main beam have been added to the options list, with Adaptive LED headlamps a further option. These follow the path of the road ahead, and also adapt their beam according to the type of road and conditions at any given moment. At the rear, new tail lamps with a familiar BMW 'L' shape design adopt striking LED technology.

The driver-focused cockpit of the new BMW 1 Series is an even more welcoming, sporty, comfortable place to sit, thanks to enhancements to the design, and the materials and fabrics used. In particular, there's a new cloth fabric for the seats.

The BMW Radio Professional and iDrive operating system continues to be standard across the entire range so all new 1 Series models feature the freestanding, 6.5-inch Control Display, the controller wheel mounted on the centre console, and the direct menu control and favourites buttons. If the optional Professional Navigation system is fitted, the Controller comes with a larger, touch-sensitive surface for inputting numbers and characters, while the onboard monitor takes the form of an 8.8-inch display of particularly slim design.
The controls arranged below the Control Display have also benefited from detailed refinements. Both the air vents and the controls for the radio and the automatic air conditioning now feature high-quality chrome surrounds. The radio and automatic air conditioning keypads, meanwhile, are set against high-gloss black panelling.

Engines: a new power unit family

The new BMW 1 Series sees the introduction of powerplants from the BMW Group's new engine family, plus an expansion of the standard-fit BMW EfficientDynamics technology.

The new engines bring a reduction in fuel consumption of up to 12 per cent while simultaneously providing more power and sharper responses. All engines meet the Euro 6 exhaust emissions standard and offer as much as 326hp in the new M135i, with C02 emissions as low as 89g/km in the new 116d EfficientDynamics Plus model. The eight-speed Steptronic transmission has been further refined.

All of the BMW 1 Series diesel engines are sourced from the BMW Group's new engine family. Points of note include the use of aluminium for the crankcase and cylinder head, a forged steel crankshaft with integrated balancer shaft drive, the configuration of the intake and exhaust components and of the ancillary systems, a map-controlled oil pump and a longitudinal positioning in the engine compartment. Other features in common are the coating of the cylinder walls, low-weight pistons, forged connecting rods, their cylinder spacing and the volume per cylinder of 500 cc – very close to the thermodynamic optimum.

In all the petrol engines, the suite of BMW TwinPower Turbo technology includes not only a turbocharger system and High Precision Direct Petrol Injection, but also VALVETRONIC fully variable valve timing and variable adjustment of the intake and exhaust camshaft (Double-VANOS).

Petrol power: four and six cylinders

The BMW 118i and BMW 120i are both powered by a 1.6-litre four-cylinder engine. It develops 136hp and 170hp respectively, offering acceleration as low as 7.2 seconds to 62mph in the 120i and with fuel consumption and CO2 emissions of just 52.3mpg and 125g/km in the 118i. The four-cylinder engine in the 125i features a 2.0-litre displacement, providing 218hp and peak torque of 310Nm, enabling a 0-62mph time of just 6.2 seconds.

At the top of the petrol engine range remains the formidable M135i with its turbocharged straight-six engine. Power has been increased in the new model to 326hp, with peak torque of 450Nm, enabling a 0-62mph time of just 4.9 seconds, yet the ability to return 37.7mpg.

The diesels: five new engines in the range

Both the new-generation three-cylinder and latest four-cylinder engines are based on the same efficiency-led concept, and boast new turbocharging technology and further developed common rail direct injection systems. Engine response has been improved via variable geometry turbines and turbocharger shaft guidance which, depending on the engine variant, involves a slide bearing or roller bearing, while new solenoid valve injectors generating injection pressure of up to 2,500 bar increase the precision of the fuel metering process. Furthermore, advances have been made with the new diesel engines in terms of acoustic comfort as well as thermodynamics, power development and efficiency.

The 1.5-litre three-cylinder engine in the new BMW 116d generates 116hp and 270Nm of torque, an increase of 10Nm compared to its predecessor. The standout figures for the new model are a 0-62mph time of 10.3 seconds coupled to fuel consumption as little as 78.5mpg and CO2 emissions of 94g/km. These efficiency figures can be improved yet further with the 116d EfficientDynamics Plus model which, via a range of measures, attains 83.1mpg with CO2 emissions of just 89g/km.

The new four-cylinder diesel engine used in the latest BMW 1 Series is offered in three states of tune: the 118d generates 150hp and 330Nm of torque, the 120d has 190hp and 400Nm, and the 125d, with its multi-stage turbocharging, provides a very impressive 224hp with 450Nm of torque, enabling this model to reach 62mph from rest in just 6.3 seconds. The 118d can achieve a fuel consumption figure of just 74.3mpg, but even the 125d manages a highly credible 61.4mpg.

The majority of new BMW 1 Series variants are fitted with a six-speed manual gearbox as standard, offering engagement speed control for the smoothest possible gearchanges. However, the 120d xDrive all feature as standard the eight-speed Steptronic gearbox otherwise available as an option. This automatic transmission has improved internal efficiency, longer gear ratios, optimised transmission management and a vibration damper. A predictive shift strategy, which works in conjunction with the car's navigation system – even when route guidance is not active – ensures that gear changes are timed precisely according to the prevailing driving situation.

The eight-speed Sport Automatic transmission is available as an option for the BMW 125i, BMW M135i, BMW 120d and BMW 120d xDrive models. This transmission is standard on the BMW 125d. It features even faster gearchanges, shift paddles on the steering wheel and a Launch Control function.

BMW EfficientDynamics: more technology to improve efficiency

The new BMW 1 Series features an expanded range of BMW EfficientDynamics features. As well as Brake Energy Regeneration, the need-based operation of ancillary components, Electric Power Steering, the Optimum Gearshift Indicator and the Auto Start Stop function (also available in conjunction with an automatic transmission), standard equipment for the new BMW 1 Series model range also includes ECO PRO mode, which can be activated using the included Driving Experience Control switch. On all cars specified with an automatic transmission – with the exception of the BMW 118i and the BMW 120i – ECO PRO mode now also offers a coasting function. In addition, vehicles with the Professional Navigation system come with a Proactive Driving Assistant function, which tells the driver when to lift off the throttle ahead of, say, corners, turn-offs, roundabouts and speed limits.

There have also been aerodynamic improvements, with the newly designed front apron and improved sealing between the headlights and bonnet optimising airflow. The BMW 116d EfficientDynamics Plus model also features active air flap control and specially designed kidney grille bars. With these measures in place, the new BMW 1 Series models have a lower drag coefficient (Cd) than that of their predecessors. The Cd of the new BMW 116d EfficientDynamics Plus model, for example, has been reduced to 0.29.

Equipment and BMW model lines

The new BMW 1 Series features an even greater range of standard equipment, while also offering an array of high quality options – many of which were originally developed for BMW cars in higher segments.

The BMW 1 Series is offered in three trims – SE, Sport and M Sport. The generous range of standard equipment fitted to all new BMW 1 Series models includes remote control central locking, keyless engine ignition, electric window controls, electrically heated exterior mirrors and the Driving Experience Control switch. Also included is automatic air conditioning, a multi-function leather steering wheel adjustable for height and reach, a rain sensor including automatic driving lights control and a front passenger airbag that can be deactivated. BMW Radio Professional including CD player with DAB, six loudspeakers and an AUX-In socket, and Bluetooth audio streaming functionality are other standard equipment features along with the iDrive operating system. Completing the offer is 16-inch alloy wheels, extended storage, sliding front armrest and fog lights.

Building on this in Sport for £1,000 more, the specification is enhanced to include 17-inch alloy wheels, ambient lighting, black high-gloss interior trim, Sport exterior styling elements, Sport steering wheel and Sports seats. For an additional £2,700 above SE specification, M Sport comes as standard with 18-inch M Sport alloy wheels, aluminium hexagon interior trim, M Aerodynamic body styling, M Sport suspension, Sport seats, Alcantara upholstery and an M Sport leather steering wheel.

The new M135i model has its own specific interpretation of the M aerodynamic package including even larger front air intakes and the typical BMW M Performance Ferric Grey wing mirrors. Naturally, the steering, suspension, gearbox and wheels/tyres combination have all been developed specifically for this high performance machine. Inside, the driving environment features many M-specific features such as the leather steering wheel, along with the use of the M135i logo.

All new BMW 1 Series models are optionally available with a 40:20:40 split rear seat backrest: folding one or more of the sections allows boot capacity to be increased in stages from 360 to 1,200-litres.

The options list of the new BMW 1 Series encompasses items for comfort, functionality and entertainment. These include: electrically adjustable and heated seats for the driver and front passenger, two-zone automatic air conditioning, a heated steering wheel and the Harman Kardon Hi-Fi system, complete with 12 loudspeakers and a digital amplifier with 360-watt output.

Connected Drive: Increasing and improving mobility via new services

The new BMW 1 Series again benefits from the development expertise of the world's leading manufacturer of premium cars, offering customers a richly varied selection of driver assistance systems and mobility services.

Standard equipment for the new BMW 1 Series includes a SIM card embedded in the car, as a mobile phone connection is required to make use of the (also standard) Intelligent Emergency Call and BMW TeleServices functions, as well as the optional internet-based services. These cover ConnectedDrive Services including the BMW Online internet portal, as well as the Concierge Services personal information service, Remote Services and Real Time Traffic information. In addition, the spectrum of services customers can integrate into their cars retrospectively via apps has been expanded. All functions are safe, convenient and intuitive to use thanks to the BMW iDrive operating system, now also standard.

Drivers can integrate app functions into their car via the embedded SIM card or a smartphone. Moreover, the latest Professional Navigation system offers online-based Real Time Traffic information and updates map data "over the air", using a mobile phone connection established by the SIM card.

An updated version of the Parking Assistant features 12 rather than the previous 10 sensors and helps the driver to select and use parking spaces lying not only parallel but now also transversely to the road. In addition, the range of features has also been extended for Park Distance Control (PDC), and there's the option of Active Cruise Control system with Stop & Go function.

The selection of driver assistance systems available for the new
BMW 1 Series also includes a rear-view camera, High Beam Assistant, Speed Limit Info including No Passing Info display and the Driving Assistant. The latter comprises the camera-based Lane Departure Warning and Collision Warning systems as well as the Attention Assistant feature.

The new BMW 1 Series is on sale 28 March, 2015 priced at £20,245 OTR for a three-door 118i SE and £20,775 OTR for a five-door 118i SE.

BMW 6 Series range for 2015

The new BMW 6 Series range for 2015

BMW will take the extraordinary step at next month's North American International Auto Show in Detroit of launching an entire new model series in one fell swoop. The next-generation BMW 6 Series Coupé, Convertible and Gran Coupé will be announced simultaneously on 9 January, 2015, before becoming the centrepieces of the BMW stand in the Cobo Arena.

* Coupe/Convertible/Gran Coupe respectively ** All versions electronically limited

The new BMW 6 Series models benefit from external styling revisions which imbue them with an even more purposeful and more powerful stance. At the same time the interiors take on a more sportingly luxurious ambience thanks to new trim materials, centre console surfaces and lighting, and there is a more extensive range of standard and personalisation features. The BMW ConnectedDrive navigation and infotainment package is fitted to every model, while Concierge Services accessed through an embedded SIM card allow drivers to set up a bespoke supply of information and connected-car services.

All petrol models have a sports exhaust system with a switchable valve which adds a more intense timbre to the engine soundtrack, while aerodynamic improvements along with the extensive package of BMW EfficientDynamics technologies mean the six-cylinder models – petrol and diesel – are even more fuel-efficient than before. Through features such as Dynamic Damper Control, Active Drive and Integral Active Steering, owners are now able to create a made-to-measure driving experience, while the latest BMW Head-Up Display and Driving Assistant Plus with Active Cruise Control minimise distractions and supplement the driver's reactions to enhance safety.

Sportier edge goes hand-in-hand with efficiency improvements

The new 6 Series range will again consist of three distinctly individual takes on a common theme – the sportily stylish classic Coupé, the exclusive all-seasons Convertible and the elegant longer-wheelbase four-door Gran Coupé. Almost 80,000 versions of the outgoing range have been sold globally in three years with the Gran Coupé now claiming almost half of 6 Series sales.

All three body styles are available with a choice of highly efficient TwinPower Turbo in-line six-cylinder and V8 engines featuring the full gamut of BMW EfficientDynamics technologies to save fuel and reduce emissions. All engines meet EU6 emissions standards and drive through an eight-speed automatic transmission which combines long ratios for ultra-efficient motorway cruising with fast-shifting capabilities that complement the vivacious character of the engines.

The 3.0-litre 313hp turbodiesel engine in the 640d models and the similar-capacity 320hp petrol engine in 640i versions are now more fuel-efficient thanks to the latest EfficientDynamics features and aerodynamic improvements. As a result, CO2 emissions are as low as 139g/km on the 640d SE Coupé. Yet every 6 Series can comfortably achieve the 0-62mph sprint in 5.5 seconds – and in many cases, considerably less. That is especially true for the 4.4-litre V8 bi-turbo 650i models, while the ultimate members of the 6 Series range will again be the 560hp V8-engined M6 cars from BMW's high-performance specialists.

All petrol versions now have a sports-tuned exhaust which provides a soundtrack to match the cars' emphatic performance. A switchable valve adjusted through the Driving Experience Control system can be used to reduce exhaust back-pressure, adding a signficiantly sportier edge to the sound coming from the tailpipes.

The suspension systems have been honed to the character of the individual models and can now be further personalised through options like Dynamic Damper Control, which varies its responses electronically according to where and how the car is being driven; Adaptive Drive, which includes roll stabilisation; and Integral Active Steering, which introduces an element of rear-wheel steer to reduce the amount of turning effort needed while enhancing agility.

New look emphasises powerful stance while further raising quality

Styling changes to the front and rear of all 6 Series variants add further emphasis to their powerful on-road presence, while new LED headlights, new metallic paint colours and revisions to the interior ensure that they continue to set the benchmark for understated luxury in their class.

The BMW kidney grille now features nine bars where previously it had 10 – a small change, perhaps, but one that emphasises the power of the engines through the amount of cooling air they need. The grille bars (black on six-cylinder models and matt aluminium for the V8s) have been reprofiled to emphasise their forward slant, and there is now a single, full-width air intake in the new apron. Full-LED headlights are now standard. They emit low-beam light from the upper reflectors and the main beam from the lower reflectors, adding a sophisticated new night-time look to the typical BMW twin circular signature lighting. Indicators are cut into the accent strip on top of the headlight units. There are also LED front foglights. Adaptive LED headlights with BMW Selective Beam anti-dazzle High Beam Assistant are optional.

At the rear, the 6 Series appears wider thanks to a new horizontal chrome bumper insert which draws attention to the wide rear track and the inherent stability this promises. Six-cylinder models also have 10mm larger chrome tailpipe embellishers in enlarged cut-outs which again attest to the cars' dynamic abilities. Newly styled side mirrors improve the cars' aerodynamic properties and contain slim horizontal indicator strips, while for the Gran Coupé the side window surround has been revised and houses a black painted aluminium section with raised "Gran Coupé" lettering at the foot of the Hofmeister kink on the C-pillar.

There are new 18-inch alloy wheels for the Coupé and Convertible, and five new metallic paint finishes – Jatoba, Cashmere Silver, Glacier Silver, Mediterranean Blue and Melbourne Red. New wheels of up to 20 inches in diameter are available.

The standard leather dashboard with contrast stitching – previously an option on all but the M Sport versions – is an immediate clue to the enhanced quality and luxury of the new range. There is now a modern, stylish high-gloss black finish on the centre console around the switches for the climate control system and audio system. This contemporary look complements the iDrive system's more precise Control Display with its chromed surround, the new multi-functional instrument panel and the LED lights to illuminate the footwells, door openings and glovebox. Dakota, Nappa or Merino leather trim will be standard in the UK, depending on model. The Nappa leather now offers two bi-colour options – Ivory White with Black or Cognac with Black.

Standard ConnectedDrive heads upgraded equipment and personalisation possibilities

BMW will reveal the UK model line-up, pricing and specification when the cars are revealed 9 January, but the range will include SE, M Sport and Sport versions, depending on engine, with the M6 models as the sporting flagships of the respective body styles.

The BMW 6 Series will be an even more competitive value proposition as a result of significant enhancements to standard equipment. At the same time there will be greater scope for personalisation through the new features now available.

ConnectedDrive, the intelligent link between a BMW and the outside world, is now standard. It provides full navigation and infotainment facilities, and includes a SIM card embedded within the car which gives the driver access to Concierge Services. This can be tailored to the owner's preferences and includes helpful information such as Real Time Traffic Information, BMW Teleservices and Intelligent Emergency Call. It can even reserve hotel rooms and find flight information, ATM machines and out-of-hours pharmacies.

ConnectedDrive is also linked as standard to the latest version of the BMW Head-Up Display, which projects essential safety and guidance information – from speed limits to navigation instructions – onto the windscreen within the driver's field of vision, but not in such a way that it could be distracting. In certain circumstances telephone number lists and entertainment information can also be called up. Meanwhile, the backlighting of the new multifunction information display now changes colour according to which driving mode – COMFORT, ECO PRO or SPORT – has been selected via the Driving Experience Control switch.

Heading the extensive range of new options for the BMW 6 Series is Driving Assistant Plus, a camera- and radar-based intelligent connected-car system incorporating Active Cruise Control with Stop & Go, Lane Departure Warning and Pedestrian and Collision Warning with Braking. It automatically maintains a safe gap to the car in front, alerts a 6 Series driver whose actions might cause a collision and, at up to 37mph, brakes the car to a standstill if there is a risk of an impact with a pedestrian.

The new BMW 6 Series Coupé, 6 Series Convertible and 6 Series Gran Coupé and their BMW M equivalents go on sale in the UK from 1 March, 2015.

BMW Christmas Gift Ideas

Christmas Gift Ideas: the new BMW Original Accessories.

Whether comfort, safety, design or functionality is uppermost in their thoughts, BMW owners can lend their car an even more individual touch with high-quality Original BMW Accessories. They can rest assured that every item in the Original BMW Accessories range has been developed specially for use in BMW models and is perfectly adapted for the job in hand. And with an array of new products available for any aspect of a BMW you’d care to mention, the extensive selection of Original BMW Accessories makes a more attractive proposition than ever.

Three new interior scents increase the feeling of wellbeing.

Refreshing, stimulating and rich in variety, the BMW Natural Air collection of interior scents boasts three new additions and a redesigned holder. The holder comprises a matt black plastic carrier and a high-quality lid with a gleaming, anthracite-coloured metal look. The intensity of the scent can now be adjusted precisely via the ventilation grille or the holder’s variable apertures. The new Vitalizing Woods fragrance combines elegant woody notes with a zesty orange and subtle vanilla aroma. Harmonizing Flowers – based primarily on the scent of jasmine and myrtle – brings to mind floral bouquets. And a delicate blend of citrus, lily of the valley and musk imbues the third new creation, Sparkling Raindrops, with an invigorating freshness. The newcomers join the tried-and-tested Purifying Green Tea, Energizing Tonic and Balancing Amber fragrance sticks in the range.

Retrofit hi-fi system from ALPINE lays on a stunning audio experience.

The new hi-fi system from ALPINE Electronics developed specially for BMW takes the in-car audio experience to another new level. Key to its performance are high-quality components (like the 420-watt hybrid six-channel DSP amplifier and improved three-way speaker system) along with the fine-tuning of the overall system to the acoustic environment inside the car. Time correction for the individual channels produces a very natural soundstage that replicates a live performance – be it jazz, pop, rock or classical music. Rear passengers can also look forward to an outstanding audio experience thanks to DSP equalisation of the rear speakers. The chrome ALPINE logo on the tweeter grilles in the front door mirror triangles lend visual emphasis to the enhanced audio performance delivered by the ALPINE hi-fi system.

Innovative BMW Head-Up Screen makes driving safer.

Driving a car without the BMW Head-Up Display doesn’t mean missing out on the additional safety it provides. Indeed, the innovative new Head-Up Screen from the Original BMW Accessories range likewise allows navigation instructions and the latest vehicle information to be displayed in the driver’s field of view. The Head-Up Screen can be used in almost all BMW vehicles, workshop installation is quick and the cable used to connect it with the vehicle electronics is barely visible. It can also be retrofitted at any time. All the information can be viewed on the transparent display and is positioned directly in the driver’s line of sight. The information on the Head-Up Screen is very easy to read, even in direct sunlight, which means drivers no longer have to take their eyes off the traffic and can concentrate without interruption on events on the road. The result is an improvement in both safety and comfort at the wheel. The Head-Up Screen shows a range of vehicle information, such as the fuel gauge and – when the temperature drops – a warning of black ice. Other functions include an output display, torque display, cruise control display, the current speed limit, a traffic jam warning and the altitude above sea level. Complementing the Head-Up Screen is the BMW Head-Up Screen app for Android and iOS, which can be used to adjust all the Head-Up Screen’s settings, such as the display brightness and selection of information to be shown. The BMW Head-Up Screen receives its navigation data via Wi-Fi using an app on the driver’s smartphone developed by Garmin and BMW (available for Android and iOS). Owners can download a free update for the navigation app once a year. Both apps are free.

Universal snap-in adapter for all current Apple iPhones.

The new Connect Universal snap-in adapter connects all Apple mobile phones with the car using a lightning adapter. All users have to do is hook up their iPhone, and the communications and entertainment content stored on it comes effortlessly alive inside their car. As well as charging the phone, the snap-in adapter also acts as a safe and secure holder with its built-in bracket. To stop the adapter and connecting cable getting in each other’s way, however, the bracket can be moved into various positions or removed altogether. The connection with the exterior aerial is via inductive coupling.

Specially designed travel set for Convertibles provides additional load capacity.

With its hardshell cabin-size trolley case and practical carry bag, the new and elegantly sporty Original BMW Travel Set enhances flexibility and provides extra load capacity for Convertible models. The Travel Set can be fixed to the rear seat quickly and easily using the seatbelt. The trick here is that the bags can be stacked on top of, as well as next to, one another – which even leaves a seat free for a rear passenger. And to protect the Travel Set from theft when the roof is open, it can be anchored to the seat belt using security locks. The robust and hard-wearing trolley case is light and easy to move around, thanks to its four rotating wheels and a telescopic handle with grip. The carry bag, meanwhile, has an adjustable inner partition and various pockets attached to the outside, ensuring items are stowed away tidily and can be quickly accessed. The printed BMW lettering and highlights provide a particularly elegant icing on the cake for the titanium-coloured trolley and carry bag.

Practical holder for Apple and Samsung tablets.

The BMW Travel & Comfort System family is part of the Original BMW Accessories range and includes a practical holder for Apple and Samsung tablets, which can be locked onto the base carrier system safely and effortlessly. It comes with a 360° rotating frame, which allows the rear passengers to turn the tablets horizontally or vertically, thus ensuring a full and comfortable user experience – both for office applications and for gaming, listening to music and watching films. In addition, the height and angle of the tablet holder can be adjusted by simply pivoting and tilting it. The familiar BMW design and impressive material and product quality of the BMW Travel & Comfort System tablet holder meet all safety stipulations governing in-car use and blend harmoniously into the interior of BMW models.

Tablet DVD system brings superb entertainment to the rear compartment.

The BMW Tablet DVD system lays on entertainment in the rear compartment – and not only for children over long journeys. With its chrome-coloured border, it fits in seamlessly with the BMW design language. The BMW Tablet DVD system comes with a pair of seven-inch colour screens, one of which contains an integrated DVD player. The accompanying holders allow quick and crash-safe attachment of the screens to the head restraint support bars. The Tablet DVD system offers numerous interfaces and connection ports for transferring data, as well as an integrated speaker, all of which makes this a fully-fledged mobile entertainment system for watching films, showing photos, and listening to music and audio books. Comfortable infrared headphones can be added as an option. A single tablet version of the BMW Tablet DVD system is also available with just one display and a DVD player.

BMW Bluetooth headset enables user-friendly telephone calls on the move.

The new-generation BMW headset makes it even easier to make telephone calls during a journey. It connects easily with a mobile phone and can be operated using buttons, gestures or voice commands – the latter allowing the driver’s hands to remain on the steering wheel. As well as ensuring drivers can easily understand what their conversation partner is saying, the headset’s outstanding sound quality and ambient noise suppression also allow them to listen to music and audio books. The headset enables two devices – e.g. one private and one business phone – to be linked up to it. It can also be used outside the car, making it ideal for both work and leisure purposes.

BMW LED door sill plates for an illuminating experience.

The BMW LED door sill plates turn heads whenever you open the front doors. A white illuminating BMW badge, which is also easily visible during the day, catches the eye every time you climb on board. The badge is framed by high-quality metal with a brushed stainless steel look and creates an aura of class. The battery-powered LED door sill plates are extremely quick to fit due to the lack of cabling required. When the door is closed – or after 30 seconds – the illumination automatically switches off again. The two button cell batteries have a lifespan of approximately three years.

Unique light concept featuring BMW LED door projectors.

BMW LED door projectors from the Original BMW Accessories range provide a whole new form of door entry illumination. When the doors are opened, they not only cast out a beam of light, but also project a graphic onto the floor area near the door opening. It is a highlight feature that draws the attention every time you get in or out of the car at dusk or in the dark. The motif can also be changed, as desired. Customers have a choice of BMW logo, BMW wordmark, M logo and the letter X for BMW X models.

BMW touch-up paint stick set provides self-fix solutions for minor paint damage.

Small scratches and stone chip damage are annoying – and not always avoidable. In many cases, though, a BMW touch-up paint stick set can help, often allowing minor paint damage to be repaired by the owner and saving them a trip to the workshop. The set consists of a BMW base coat and clear coat, which means the two-coat structure of the original paintwork can be restored. In a practical feature, the brush for applying the paint is integrated directly into the screw-on cap.

Special care products for modern matt paint finishes.

Matt paint finishes are steadily growing in popularity. In order to provide sustained care for these special paint finishes and maintain their special effect over a long period, the Original BMW Accessories range contains products to clean and care for matt finishes. The selection of care products includes shampoo, special cleaner, special express wax and nano wax. All the products complement each other perfectly in terms of effect and provide the best possible protection for BMW matt paint finishes.

LED front foglamps with cornering light function for improved visibility.

Another safety-enhancing item in the Original BMW Accessories range are the LED front foglamps with cornering light function. They provide broader than usual illumination of the road, and the integrated cornering light function improves visibility when turning off, manoeuvring, parking and negotiating hairpin bends. The right or left foglamp lights up as required in response to the steering angle and activation of the right- or left-hand indicator, and gives the driver significantly better and more extensive visibility in the otherwise dark area to the side of the car. Replacing the halogen front foglamps with LED units is easy, as they fit neatly into the relevant mounts. The cornering light function can also be retrofitted in existing halogen front foglamps.

BMW blue halogen bulbs provide improved lighting and a xenon effect.

“To see and be seen more effectively” sums up the mission statement of the BMW blue halogen bulbs. Joining the BMW H3, H7 and H11 blue halogen bulbs are the new BMW H8 blue halogen bulbs, which bring a stronger xenon light colour to the car’s daytime running light rings and front foglamps, as well as the cornering lights. BMW blue halogen bulbs generate an up to 30 percent brighter light, which enables improved illumination of the road and gives the headlights an attractive blue “xenon” effect. Also available alongside the BMW blue halogen bulbs are BMW blue xenon bulbs (D1S and D2S), which generate a bluish-white light similar to that of LED headlights, plus BMW power halogen bulbs (H7 and H11) and BMW power xenon bulbs (D1S and D2S). Their significantly greater light output enables the headlights to offer even greater range, ensuring fatigue-free driving in darkness as well.

Power is fed to the battery conveniently and efficiently using the BMW battery charger and Battery Comfort Indicator.

The battery charger from the Original BMW Accessories range is far more than a normal charger. It has reverse polarity protection and is suitable both for fully automatic charging of 12-volt batteries in eight stages and for maintenance charging. In addition, it has a battery diagnosis function to identify aging batteries, reconditions batteries with a low charge, optimises charging on cold winter days and even tops up high-end AGM batteries, which require particularly sensitive charging. A display keeps the driver permanently informed of the charging process. Charging the battery is particularly easy with the Battery Comfort Indicator (available separately), which makes it even simpler to hook up the charger to the battery and displays the battery status at all times.

The new BMW X5 M and X6 M

The ultra-high performance with exceptional fuel efficiency that characterises every car from BMW's sporty M division is once more fused with all-roads, all-weathers capability with the introduction of the second-generation X5 M and X6 M. Compared to the 2009 models which they succeed, they bring improvements of up to 10 per cent in power, torque and performance while lowering fuel consumption and CO2 emissions by over 20 per cent.

Both models are powered by a new 4.4-litre M TwinPower Turbo V8 engine with two TwinScroll turbochargers. With outputs of 575 hp and 750 Nm, it is the most powerful engine ever developed by BMW for four-wheel-drive vehicles. It is linked to a newly developed eight-speed M Steptronic automatic transmission now featuring Drivelogic. The cars' outstanding driving dynamics benefit from specific tuning by BMW M, while their bespoke interior and exterior designs blend sportiness, luxury and functionality.

Model Power

Torque   Nm 0 – 62mph Seconds Top Speed Mph Combined Mpg CO2 Emissions g/km
BMW X5 M 575 750 4.2 155* 25.4 258
BMW X6 M 575 750 4.2 155* 25.4 258
*  Electronically limited

The new M TwinPower Turbo V8 engine: the best of all worlds

The bare figures for the new BMW 4.4-litre V8 engine in the X5 M and X6 M are impressive enough in themselves, but they tell only half the story. This new power unit develops its maximum 575 hp – four per cent more than the engine in the previous models – from 6,000 to 6,500 rpm, while peak torque of 750 Nm (a gain of 10 per cent) is available from 2,200 to 5,000 rpm. This combination of high-revving capability with linear, rapid response is thanks to the engine's innovative M TwinPower Turbo technologies, which include cross-bank exhaust manifolds, two TwinScroll turbochargers, direct fuel injection working at a pressure of up to 200 bar and VALVETRONIC variable valve control.

These technologies, in combination with the newly developed eight-speed M Steptronic transmission with Drivelogic, ensure performance more than meets the expectations of a car from BMW M while at the same time demonstrating exceptional fuel efficiency. The X5 M and X6 M accelerate from 0-62 mph in a supercar-equalling 4.2 seconds, but in normal road driving they are capable of 25.4 mpg, with CO2 emissions  of 258 g/km – reductions of over 20 per cent compared to the previous models.
The cross-bank exhaust manifold sends two converged streams of exhaust gas to the TwinScroll turbochargers through four separate exhaust ducts. The engine features an extremely rigid closed-deck crankcase which permits the high fuel injection pressures necessary for it to achieve its impressive power output. A lightweight, torsionally stiff forged crankshaft with low rotating masses helps to sharpen the engine's responses.

Every model from BMW M has to be passed as 'fit for the Nordschleife'. The extreme lateral and longitudinal acceleration put upon cars when lapping the Nurburgring places high demands on an engine's oil supply, but sophisticated sump and suction snorkel geometry ensures that the X5 M and X6 M can generate up to 1.2 g without problems. Meanwhile, a combination of low- and high-temperature radiators ensures optimum cooling for the engine coolant, charge air and engine and transmission oil. Electronically controlled flaps within the exhaust system help to provide a riche sporty soundtrack.

The eight-speed M Steptronic transmission with Drivelogic delivers all the advantages in terms of responsiveness of the M Double Clutch gearbox in other BMW M models, with the smoothness of a torque converter automatic. It also allows for a wider spread of gear ratios to foster greater fuel efficiency, and for the first time in a torque converter automatic it permits 'creep on demand' through the Low Speed Assistant system. The Drivelogic function allows the driver to prioritise fuel economy, comfort or sports performance, while gear changing can be fully automatic or driver-controlled via paddles on the steering wheel. A Launch Control function is fitted to permit perfect standing starts.

The xDrive four-wheel-drive system is fully flexible in the way it distributes torque to each axle, to ensure maximum traction on all roads and in all weathers. Normally the bias is towards the rear to give the X5 M and X6 M maximum agility, but when the occasion demands, 100 per cent of engine torque can be sent to either axle.

Sports Activity Vehicles with the emphasis on 'sport'

BMW created the Sports Activity Vehicle sector with the original X5 and X6, and the new M models are once again the ultimate expression of the genre. They now deliver improved cornering force through revisions to the upper front wishbones, which have increased camber, camber progression and steering pivot axis, while directional stability has been increased thanks to revised elastokinematics with more rigid bearings. The X5 M and X6 M feature firmer suspension tuning than other X5 and X6 models, a 10 mm lower ride height, Dynamic Drive active roll stabilisation and self-levelling air suspension at the rear. Dynamic Performance Control with COMFORT, SPORT and SPORT+ modes allows the driver to personalise the suspension settings at the touch of a button.
Both models feature specially developed mixed tyres to ensure the maximum steering precision and feedback, traction and lateral and directional stability. They are fitted as standard with Pirelli P Zero tyres (285/40 R 20 Y at the front and 325/35 R 20 Y at the rear) on 20-inch light-alloy rims, but 21-inch wheels with Michelin Pilot Super Sport UHP tyres (285/35 R 21 Y front; 325/30 R 21 Y rear) are optionally available.

The steering is an electronically assisted rack and pinion M Servotronic system with M-specific gearing and tuning. Compared to a conventional hydraulic steering set-up, it reduces fuel consumption by 0.3 litres per 100 kilometres (62 miles). As with the suspension, drivers can opt for COMFORT, SPORT and SPORT+ settings. The high-performance brakes have been hones in motor sport and feature six-piston fixed callipers at the front, single-piston floating callipers at the rear and 50 per cent larger brake linings than those in the previous models. Weight has been reduced by 1.6 kg, helping to reduce unsprung masses. The brake callipers are painted in Dark Blue metallic.
The new four-wheel-drive M models now feature an optimised DSC (Dynamic Stability Control) system which permits an even more dynamic driving style and includes the additional safety functions Brake Standby, Brake Drying, Fading Compensation and Start-Off Assistant. DSC now allows three driving modes – DSC on, in which case the electronic systems provide maximum help to maintain stability;  M Dynamic Mode (MDM), which allows some mild drifting before the electronics come to the driver's assistance; and DSC off, which intervenes only in the most extreme circumstances.

Sportiness meets luxury in the function-led design

The exterior design of the new BMW X5 M and X6 M is purely function-led. The four large air intakes and flaps at the front and the diffuser at the rear perform essential cooling and aerodynamic functions, for example, and the same is true of the M-specific Air Breathers behind the front wheels, which reduce turbulence in the front wheel arches. Airflow around the cars is so well managed that both drag and lift are minimised.

From the front, the two cars are identical, but as they stretch backwards the X5 M demonstrates its sporting practicality and versatility while the X6 M has the flowing lines of a high-performance sports coupé. Both have the raised seating position typical of a BMW X model. The headlights with integrated washer system are borrowed from the BMW X6, while special flaps in the outer front air intakes – adapted from those on racing cars – reduce lift. Both cars have twin-stalk exterior door mirrors with integral indicators. At the rear, there are body-coloured M aprons and a distinctive four-tailpipe exhaust – another M hallmark. The X6 M has a spoiler to reduce rear-axle lift.

The interiors exude sporting luxury. There is an M leather steering wheel with gearshift paddles, an M gearshift lever, an M Drive menu in the information display and M Drive buttons on the steering wheel. The M front sports seats, like the rest of the upholstery, are trimmed in fine-grain Merino leather with contrast stitching, and there are embossed M logos. Door sill strips with model lettering, aluminium interior trim strips and an anthracite-coloured roof liner from BMW Individual add further touches of sporting exclusivity.

Standard features include Adaptive Dynamic suspension, Adaptive M suspension, Cruise Control with brake function, Driving Assistant, Dynamic Stability Control Plus (ABS, ASC, brake drying, brake fade compensation, brake pre-tensioning, Cornering Brake Contol, Dynamic Brake Control, Dynamic Traction Control, Electronic Brake-force Distribution and Hill-start Assistant), Hill Descent Control, front and rear Park Distance Control and a rain sensor with automatic headlight control.

There are 40:20:40 split folding rear seats, electric driver's seat adjustment with memory, heated front seats, downlights in the exterior door handles, High-gloss Shadowline exterior trim (including the roof rails on the X5 M), metallic paint, a split tailgate with a powered upper section (for the X5 M), two-zone automatic air conditioning, front and rear cup holders and courtesy lights, all-round electric windows with comfort closing, velour floor mats, footwell lights (LED in the front), a leather-trimmed instrument panel, Aluminium Trace interior trim with Pearl Grey Chrome finishers, a retractable and removable luggage cover, four 12-volt power sockets, electric steering wheel adjustment, green window tinting and an engine start/stop button.

Infotainment is provided by the BMW Professional DAB radio with a single CD player. There is also a 20GB hard disc drive and a socket for connecting auxiliary devices. Both cars are also supplied with Enhanced Bluetooth featuring Voice Control, BMW ConnectedDrive services (Apps interface, Emergency Call, Online Services, TeleServices, Information Plus, Real Time Traffic Information and Remote Services), an M-specific Head- up Display, BMW Professional Multimedia Navigation and an On-Board Computer.

The BMW X5 M and X6 M arrive in dealerships on 11 April, 2015, and will be priced at £90,170 and £93,070 respectively.

Wednesday 15 October 2014

15 years of BMW X models.

It all started with an X. This letter was first used as a model designation for a BMW automobile as early as in the mid-1980s to indicate that it featured four-wheel drive technology. The car’s dual symmetry was the ideal allegory for the transmission of drive torque to all four wheels. 15 years ago, the letter X became the symbol of an entirely new vehicle category and, at the same time, of a very special form of driving pleasure. The BMW X5 made its debut as the world’s first Sports Activity Vehicle, soon going on to conquer not only the road but also off-road terrain, whilst attracting additional target groups to the BMW brand. Once again the German premium automobile manufacturer had demonstrated its extraordinary sense for innovative and future-oriented vehicle concepts. The introduction of the BMW X5 in 1999 laid the foundation stone for the unique success story of BMW X models on automotive markets all over the world.

15 years further on, a complete BMW X family has developed from the pioneer of a new vehicle category. The brand’s range now comprises five BMW X models. These are complemented by the two four-wheel drive high-performance sports cars of the BMW M GmbH, the BMW X5 M and the BMW X6 M. The BMW X5 is already the third generation of its kind to continue the story of success. The second generation of the Sports Activity Coupe BMW X6 and the BMW X3 are now being produced. The BMW X1 offers a guarantee of multi-faceted driving pleasure in the compact segment. And the BMW X4, a Sports Activity Coupe, now also combines superior dynamism with sporting elegance in the mid-range segment. Each of these models was the first premium vehicle of its kind within its competitive environment. And the range will continue to expand also in the years ahead. The BMW X7, an exceptionally large and luxurious model, is under development. The popularity of BMW X models, which contributed decisively towards BMW becoming one of the world’s most successful producer of premium four-wheel drive automobiles, continues to increase consistently. To this day, more than 3.3 million BMW X models have been sold worldwide. Almost every third newly registered vehicle of the brand is now a BMW X model.

Uncompromising driving pleasure – also in four-wheel drive models.

The BMW X5 made an impressive start with a driving experience that was unique to models of the brand. It was characterised above all by the high seating position and excellent handling both on the road and on off-road terrain. This was supplemented by the exceptionally spacious, variably utilisable and luxuriously equipped interior. From the very start, the unique position of the BMW X5 within the competitive environment of off-road vehicles was a result of its unparalleled driving dynamics. As opposed to conventional off-roaders, the BMW X5 featured a self-supporting safety body shell and independent suspension. The four-wheel drive system distributed drive torque to the front and rear wheels at a ratio of 38 : 62 percent. Thanks to the standard vehicle stability control feature DSC (Dynamic Stability Control), ADB-X (Automatic Differential Brake) and downhill control HDC (Hill Descent Control), the BMW X5 was equipped not only for sporty motoring, but also for the challenges of driving on off-road terrain.

From the beginning, power transmission to all four wheels was deployed by BMW not merely to optimise traction on unpaved roads and in adverse weather conditions, but also to enhance driving dynamics when taking bends. Therefore, in the case of the current models equipped with the intelligent four-wheel drive feature xDrive, and in contrast to other manufacturers who use four-wheel drive predominantly to compensate for traction losses experienced on front-wheel drive vehicles, BMW consistently adheres to the typical characteristics of the rear-wheel drive concept.  In this way, even in normal driving situations most of the torque is transferred to where it is optimally transformed into vehicle dynamics – the rear wheels. As a result, the steering precision that is characteristic of a BMW also remains virtually free from drivetrain influences on four-wheel drive models. Moreover, when cornering at higher speeds, steering response is optimised through a targeted increase in torque delivered to the rear wheels.

The innovative combination of traction, dynamics and comfort that characterised the first-generation BMW X5 was in overwhelming demand above all in the USA, but also in Europe and other markets. By the middle of 2005, the 500,000th BMW X5 had rolled off the assembly line, with a total of almost 620,000 units of the first Sports Activity Vehicle being built at the BMW Spartanburg plant. Today, the production location in the US Federal State of South Carolina is the competence centre for BMW X models. The current model generations of the BMW X5, the BMW X6 and the BMW X3 as well as the BMW X4 are produced there. Also, the BMW X5 M and the BMW X6 M are “born in the USA”.

BMW X3

Proven concept, new segment and premiere of BMW xDrive: The BMW X3.

With the transfer of the SAV concept to a further vehicle segment in 2004, BMW became a pioneer yet again. With its more compact dimensions versus the BMW X5 and its even more agile handling characteristics, the BMW X3 proved to be an absolute exception and remained the only premium vehicle in its class for many years. Furthermore, the BMW X3 featured a new kind of permanent power transmission to all four wheels – intelligent BMW xDrive. With its extremely fast responding, electronically controlled multiple disk clutch inside the transfer case and thanks to being interlinked with the vehicle stability control system DSC, the new system, which was simultaneously introduced on the BMW X5, offered unbeatably favourable prerequisites for variable, on-demand power transmission.

Characteristic driving pleasure, premium quality and, in addition, outstanding efficiency bestowed the BMW X3 with great popularity and numerous accolades. These included best ratings in the “Customer Satisfaction Index” (CSI) published by the J.D. Power market research institute and in the breakdown statistics of the Allgemeiner Deutscher Automobilclub (ADAC). Twice in succession, the BMW X3 was winner of the title “Four-wheel car of the year” and “Off-road vehicle of the year” in the readers’ poll conducted by the magazines “Auto Bild Allrad” and “Off Road” respectively. The first-generation BMW X3 was sold more than 600,000 times worldwide before being replaced by its successor in 2010.

BMW X5

Confidently continuing its predecessor’s success story: The second generation of the BMW X5.

In 2006, production of the second-generation BMW X5 began at the BMW Spartanburg plant. With enhanced spatial comfort, a luxurious ambience, even more superior drive technology as well as innovative suspension and driver assistant systems, the successor to the pioneer of the Sports Activity Vehicle again set new benchmarks within the broadened competitive environment of BMW X models. Moreover, the BMW X5 of the second generation was the brand’s first model that could be equipped with up to seven seats.

Cutting-edge eight- and six-cylinder petrol engines as well as outstandingly economical six-cylinder diesel power units in conjunction with extensive BMW EfficientDynamics technology ensured that the BMW X5 was able to combine its extraordinary qualities with fuel consumption and emission levels that were unparalleled in this vehicle and performance class. The high appeal of the large SAV was attested by numerous awards for design, safety and quality. In 2007, the BMW X5 received the design award “autonis” presented by the trade magazine “auto motor und sport“ and a Gold Award in the J.D. Power North American customer satisfaction study. These were complemented in 2008 by a class victory in the “auto, motor und sport” readers’ poll “The Best Cars”. In 2007 and 2008, the US-American Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) voted the car “Top Safety Pick” for outstanding crash test behaviour. Furthermore, exceptionally high value retention became a trademark of the BMW X5. As a result, the German trade magazine “Auto Bild” voted it “Value Champion of the Year” both in 2007 and 2008. With almost 730,000 units sold worldwide, the second generation of the BMW X5 was again able to clearly outperform its predecessor’s success.

BMW X6

Innovative concept for even greater driving pleasure: The Sports Activity Coupe BMW X6.

The successful establishment of the Sports Activity Vehicle concept in two vehicle segments was followed by further innovations with which BMW was able to further strengthen its unique position within the competitive environment of four-wheel drive vehicles. In the spring of 2008, BMW presented the world’s first Sports Activity Coupe. The BMW X6, which from that time on was produced together with the BMW X5 at the BMW Spartanburg plant, underscored the handling dynamics that are typical of BMW X models in a particularly intensive way. Its design combined sporting elegance with a powerful presence. For an even sportier driving experience, the permanent four-wheel xDrive technology featured on this model was complemented for the first time by Dynamic Performance Control, additionally facilitating variable power distribution between the right and left rear wheels.

The first Sports Activity Coupe also assumed a pioneering role in the field of innovative BMW ActiveHybrid Technology. In the case of the BMW ActiveHybrid X6 presented in 2009, superior drive power was generated by an eight-cylinder petrol engine and two electric motors and transferred via the four-wheel drive system BMW xDrive to the front and rear axles as required. With a system output of 357 kW/485 hp, the BMW ActiveHybrid X6 was at market launch the world’s most powerful series production model featuring hybrid drive.

Moreover, in the same year of 2009, two remarkable models were added to the range of high performance sports cars from BMW M GmbH. Inspired by the dynamic potential of BMW X models, developers showcased for the first time on four-wheel drive models the high-performance character associated with the letter M. A V8 power unit specially developed for the two exceptional athletes and featuring M TwinPower Turbo technology and an output of 408 kW/555 hp as well as an M-specific xDrive system including Dynamic Performance Control, formed the basis for an unmatched driving experience in BMW X5 M and BMW X6 M models.

BMW X1

The BMW X1: Role model for multi-faceted driving pleasure in the premium compact segment.

Since 2009, the driving pleasure typical of BMW X models can also be experienced in the compact segment. Thanks to the versatility, sportiness, high degree of agility and cutting-edge functionality of the BMW X1, it was possible to venture yet again into a whole new vehicle class. The compact BMW X model became the forerunner of this segment and a success all over the world, with more than 300,000 units being sold within two and a half years. The BMW X1 is produced at the BMW Leipzig plant. In addition, this model is now also built in collaboration with joint venture partner, Brilliance China Automotive Holdings Ltd., at the Shenyang plant. A total of more than 640,000 BMW X1 models have now been sold worldwide.

With five full-size seats and a 40 : 20 : 40 split-folding rear seatback as standard, the BMW X1 offers a generous and variably utilisable interior spatial concept. State-of-the-art engines with BMW TwinPower Turbo technology guarantee agility and efficiency.  Depending on the engine variant, the BMW X1 can be equipped either with the intelligent four-wheel drive system xDrive or also with brand-typical rear-wheel drive. The 8-speed Steptronic transmission, which is unique in this vehicle class, is also available as an option.
